HOSA

2009-2010 HOSA Officers

Andrew (President)

N1. What got you interested in medicine?

I first became interested in medicine in the 10th grade. I owe it to my mother when she started seeing a Natural Physician, that I took an interest. I've always liked helping people and make a difference, that now I know my life's purpose.

2. How did you find out about HOSA and what made you decide to join?

I found out about HOSA as a sophomore, from seeing students in scrubs and talking to them. I decided to join one day by just walking in and asking for the application packet, and would you believe it, here I am today.I guess it was the interest in medicine that made me join, but I also wanted a pair of scrubs!
3. What experience have you gained from being in HOSA and how has it affected you?

I have truly learned so much from being in HOSA. I could write a book of all the things I've learned and experienced. Everything from medical terminology to taking vital signs, it has truely opened many doors in my life.

4. What are your future career plans?

After I graduate college and medical school, I hope to do a residency in either oncology or pyschiatry. My goal is to help as many people as possible and help guide people to the right direction towards optimal health.
5. Why did you become interested in an officer position in the HOSA program?

I became interested in an officer position when my health science 1 & 2 TA's told me I would be excellent at president. I then got the same approval from classmates and friends. I have always wanted to lead something, and I have felt I could keep HOSA the best organization on campus and enrich our club with new opportunities. I want HOSA to remain a place where everyone contributes to our success, in what ever it is we do.

Kayla (1st Vice-President)

1. What got you interested in medicine?

When I was three years old, my grandmother on my father’s side was diagnosed with breast and bone cancer, and my mom and myself always used to take her to the different hospitals.  And like most kids I wanted to be a doctor when I “grew up”, but seeing grandmother suffer along with all the rest of the patients, I knew I wanted to help people for the rest of my life.

2. How did you find out about HOSA and what made you decide to join?

When I first came to Flanagan’s freshmen invasion, I walked around to see what would catch my attention, and in one corner of the cafeteria was a big HOSA banner with a stethoscope off to the side, and I just had to walk over and see what they were about.  I was so excited I couldn’t wait to join but the only problem was freshmen weren’t allowed.

3. What experience have you gained from being in HOSA and how has it affected you?

I have gained so much from being in HOSA the past three years of my high school career, from time management to being organized for every event.  It has taught me to understand the medical profession a little more than what we see as patients, we have the privilege of stepping into a doctors shoes.

4. What are your future career plans?

I hope to become an oncologist and hopefully open my own practice.

5. Why did you become interested in an officer position in the HOSA program?

What better way to lead then from the front, as vice president I realized I could help from every aspect of the club and class.  This way I can help others, just as former officers had helped us.

Shivany (2nd Vice-President)

1. What got you interested in medicine?
I believe the medical field is one of the most rewarding professions and the most important in people's lives.  I have always loved caring and helping people and the feeling I get when I know I made a difference.  I know no other profession would meet my interest more than the medical field.

2. How did you find out about HOSA and what made you decide to join?
When I was a sophomore in Geometry class, I would always see a gir
l wearing blue scrubs and I would wonder what class she was taking.  One day I asked her and she explained to me that she was in HOSA.  She told me in that class you learn about medical terminology and skills you need to know in the medical field.  She also explained that after taking Health Science 1 and 2, you could take Health Science 3 and 4, which is going to the hospital and observe different units and do a directed study.  I know this class would teach me everything I needed to know and it would be a lot of fun.  She told me where to go to get an application and before I knew it I was wearing blue scrubs too.

 3. What experience have you gained from being in HOSA and how has it affected you?
This year will be my third year being a member in HOSA.  I don't think I would be the person I am today if I would have never joined this class.  I've learned so much, from how to be organized, how to put together a successful blood drive, how to study, how to get my work done on time, and how to be a good student all around.  All these experiences have made me mature, a better student and person.

4. What are your future career plans?
I am really not sure exactly what it is that I want to pursue in the medical field, but I have a few interest.  I've always been
interested in the labor and delivery unit and after observing a surgery I became interested in surgical technology.  I plan on keeping an open mind and choosing something I know I will enjoy.

5. Why did you become interested in an officer position in the HOSA program?
After finishing Health Science 1,2,3, and 4 I wasn't ready to leave HOSA yet.  I became interested in becoming an officer because I went through so much in this club and couldn't imagine school without it.  I know I would be a great leader and could bring some new ideas to the table.

Jayleen (Recording Secretary)

1. What got you interested in medicine?
I first became interested in medicine after realizing that i loved helping people. I have always been aware of the medical field because of my father who is a doctor, seeing how knowledgeable he was i wanted that same knowledge. I wanted to help my community as much as he was able to. And that's when i fell in love with medicine.

2. How did you find out about HOSA and what made you decide to join?
I found out about HOSA through my older sister Marilyn. She was in HOSA and was also a historian. Going through school and seeing my sister practice pre-fixes and do her body outline, I just absolutely loved it and wanted to experience it.

3. What experience have you gained from being in HOSA and how has it affected you?
While being in HOSA, I have learned to become more organized and how to take responsibility. I have learned about the amazing human body and how it works. Also entering the HOSA classroom, I was very childish. I liked to play around and laugh and act act like a child but after being in HOSA, I learned how to become mature and take things seriously to extent. I also learned how to act like an adult and how to speak to professional people.

4. What are your future career plans?
At the moment I am still very confused. I love so many of the branches of the medical field. If I had to narrow it down to 3 branches, it would be either ENT(ears, nose, and throat), an OBGYN, or a dentist.

5. Why did you become interested in an officer position in the HOSA program?
I just fell in love with the club. I had an amazing teacher that will remain in my heart forever Ms. Tei. And as much as I miss her now and will miss her forever she will always remain a part of me. I have learned so much from her she was an amazing person, teacher, and she was also like a mother. After hearing that Ms. Tei was being dropped from our school by our Broward School System, I was very upset and I knew that without her our HOSA program would not run. So that is why I thought that I should take up that position of recording secretary in our program. So that I can bring my ideas to the table and also keep the traditions and teaching that Ms. Tei taught to us.

1. What got you interested in medicine?

I have always liked to help people, and do everything I can so that they can be and feel safe. Also, make them feel like they have someone to rely on and when I found out about the medical field a couple years back, I decided that is what I wanted to do.

2. How did you find out about HOSA and what made you decide to join?
I found out about HOSA through my cousin Erick Burneo, a HOSA graduate and he told me all the great opportunities that HOSA offered and the doors that it opened for college and being that my interest was already in health science, I decided to go ahead and apply.

I have learned so much from this wonderful program, I have learned many skills that will certainly be needed when I pursue my dream in the field of medicine. I have learned the seriousness of having a persons life in my hands. The CPR course was one of the courses that truly confirmed to me that medicine is what I want to go into because it was all quick. You learn to think and act responsibly on the spot. It is rare to have second chances when it comes to real lives.
